GODLY PARENTS VERSUS UNGODLY CHILDREN

1 Samuel 8:2-3 Joel and Abijah, his oldest sons, held court in Beersheba. But they were not like their father, for they were greedy for money. They accepted bribes and perverted justice.

One of life's paradoxes is how children of godly parents and children from good homes live contrary lifestyles. Prophet Samuel grew up in the house of God during the priestly reign of Eli. He saw how wayward Eli's children were to the extent that God cut them off from the priestly lineage and they died in battle against the Philistines. Anyone would think Samuel's children would be better off but no, they were also wayward children just like Eli's children. This is also seen in society. We see some children of ministers of the gospel, leaders in the nation and community whose children live wayward lives to the amazement of all.

What is the missing puzzle? Does the failure of the children of these leaders discredit their integrity? Parenting is a conscious effort. Parents should not assume their status in society will automatically mould the lifestyle of their children. They must teach their children the ways of the Lord. The man after God's own heart David had a wayward son Absalom, Samuel had Joel and Abijah, Eli's children were wayward, and The godly king Hezekiah had an evil son Manasseh who is described by the bible as one king who did great evil in all of Israel. God never questioned these parents about the behaviours of their children except for Eli because he failed as a father to nurture them in the fear of the Lord even when God warned him. 1 Samuel 3:12-13In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.

If as a parent you know you have done your very best in bringing up your children in the fear of the Lord, then God will not blame you for their deviant behaviours but if you are responsible the wrath of God will come upon you like it did upon Eli and his lineage. Children have the responsibility of obeying their parents in the Lord and parents have the responsibility of bringing up the children in the fear of the Lord. When all is said and done both children and parents will stand before God to give their account of stewardship. We are all involved.

Prayer: Our Father in Heaven turn the hearts of the parents to the children, and the hearts of the children to their parents, so You don't strike the earth with a curse in Jesus' name. Amen.
