THE RIGHT ZEAL

Numbers 25:13 In this covenant, I give him and his descendants a permanent right to the priesthood, for in his zeal for me, his God, he purified the people of Israel, making them right with me.”

Number twenty - five starts with the people of Israel dwelling in a town called Shittim. As they dwelled there the men of Isreal began having affairs with the women of Moab an act God warned them about. The women enticed the people of Israel into offering sacrifices to their gods and worshipping Baalpeor. This aroused the fierce anger of God who commanded that all family heads in Israel be killed. Numbers 25:5 So Moses ordered Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death the men under your authority who have joined in worshipping Baal of Peor.”

When all the people assembled before God, to be killed one of them exposed a Midain woman in the sight of Moses and all Israel. Phinehas, the son of Eleazar did something that calmed God's wrath. Numbers 25:7-29 When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. He took a spear and rushed after the man into his tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man’s body and into the woman’s stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped, but not before 24,000 people had died. This act of Phinehas killing the culprits pleased God and stopped the death of many more people.

We are in a generation where we are very diplomatic about sin and shield those engaged in it. We don't name and shame those who are responsible for wrong acts even when their wrong actions braid havoc in society. Many lives will be saved if we name and shame such people. God recommended Phinehas for what he did and entered into a covenant with him. Numbers 25:10 -12 Then the lord said to Moses, “Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest has turned my anger away from the Israelites by being as zealous among them as I was. So I stopped destroying all Israel as I had intended to do in my zealous anger. Now tell him that I am making my special covenant of peace with him.

It is very okay and an acceptable thing before God to expose people responsible for evil in society. You are not helping humanity if you keep quiet and allow them to continue in their evil. God has left the responsibility of exposing evil in society to us. Society, people and nations will continue to suffer and be destroyed if we decided not to name and shame the guilty ones. Ananias and Sapphira were exposed when they even lied about the sales of their own property. Paul told the church of Corinth to expose and expel the man having an affair with his stepmother.

Exposing evil is not being judgemental at all, it makes you attract enemies and criticism but that's okay. God has a different view on it, He calls it the right zeal just as out of the zeal for God Jesus Christ drove out the people who had turned His Father's house into a marketplace. God enters into an eternal covenant with those who are zealous for Him. God will enter into a covenant with you when people conflict with you because of your zeal for Him. Blessed are you when you are zealous for God.

Prayer: Holy Spirit give me the boldness to expose evil wherever I find myself to save many lives and to bring glory to your name. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
