THE DANGER OF SHOWMANSHIP
Isaiah 39:3-4Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him, "What did those men want? Where were they from?" Hezekiah replied, "They came from the distant land of Babylon." "What did they see in your palace?" asked Isaiah. "They saw everything," Hezekiah replied. "I showed them everything I own—all my treasures."
It is only natural that you show your accomplishments, it brings you fulfilment and sends a message that you are excelling. As a fact, no one displays their failures. People are not attracted to your failures but they are attracted to your success stories. Success has many friends. King Hezekiah after recovering from an ailment that nearly caused his death but for divine intervention had several people come around to wish him well and to celebrate with him.
One of his guests was the reps of Babylonian king Merodach-Baladan who came with their gifts and best wishes to him. But in receiving them Hezekiah forgot what God had told them in His word. Deuteronomy 8:12-14 For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, that is the time to be careful.
Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.
At the time the people arrived pride entered the heart of king Hezekiah, He forgot to acknowledge to the people that all he had achieved came from God. He gave credit to himself and discredited God. Slavery is anything or a situation that limits you. For you it may be that God has broken the power of addiction over your life, you have been saved by the Grace of God, you have been healed just like king Hezekiah.Your financial fortunes have changed, your marriage has been stabilised or you have experienced opened doors in diverse ways. In sharing your testimonies and displaying your successes don't let pride enter into your heart to forget God. When Isaiah questioned king Hezekiah in his answer he demonstrated he had forgotten about the help of God, he was using I, and never acknowledged God in his statement.
Isaiah 39:4 "What did they see in your palace?" asked Isaiah. "They saw everything," Hezekiah replied. "I showed them everything I own—all my treasures."
If you forget or fail to acknowledge the God who delivered you from slavery He will take you back into slavery and your situation will be worse off, even generations unborn will come and bare the consequences of your pride and non-acknowledgement of God.
Isaiah 39:6 - 7 The time is coming when everything you have—all the treasures stored up by your ancestors—will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. Some of your own descendants will be taken away into exile. They will become eunuchs who will serve in the palace of Babylon's king."
Always remember to be humble at heart and give all glory and acknowledgement to God in sharing your success stories. Tell them is just by the mercies and Grace of God.
Prayer: Holy Spirit rid my heart of the spirit of pride that comes with lifting and successes, and cause me to stay humble at all times. I will continue to lift my cup of salvation and tell the world is all because of You in Jesus. Amen
