UNCONCERNED FATHERS
1 Samuel 3:13-14 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ’The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’"
Eli was a priest of God but failed in his responsibility as a father. He failed to trains his sons in the ways of the Lord. He cut his bloodline from the priesthood inheritance. We can juxtapose Eli with two fathers in the Bible, Job and Abraham. The Bible says of Job in Job 1:5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning, he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job’s regular custom. Eli never did this even though he heard about the vile his children did he never performed any purification for them. Eventually, when God decides to avenge on children he did not care either see his response in 1 Samuel 3:14 & 18 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ’The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’" So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, "He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes." At this point when his children were even going to be destroyed, he did not care to make intercession on their behalf. Let look at father Abraham in Genesis 18:22-24 when he heard about the destruction of Sodom. The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. Then Abraham approached him and said: "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Abraham kept interceding for Lot before the Lord so he and his family would not be destroyed. But not so with Eli he just didn't care. It not enough to give your children education and inheritance your number responsibility as a father is to lead your children to have a relationship with the Lord. Genesis 18:19 For I have chosen him so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him." Don't be a father that cuts your bloodline from the blessings of the Lord. Be a father that will lead generations after the ways of the Lord.
Prayer: Lord Jesus raise fathers who connect the heart of the children to God. In our times give us praying fathers who will ensure the will of God prevails in the lives of their children in Jesus' name. Amen.
