THE CHARGE TO KEEP

1Timothy 3:2 For an elder must be a man whose life cannot be spoken against. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exhibit self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home and must be able to teach.

Matthew 5:13-14 "You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. These words of Jesus set the tone for your devotional today.

Our verse for today is often quoted and used during ordination services of Christian leaders in all forms. Elders and deacons were indeed mentioned, but this charge is also to all believers; once you quote the verse am the head and not the tail, excitingly, you should also be ready to accept this charge God has given to the believers in His. If you are seated with Christ in the heavenly places, then this charge is for you as well. What is the charge? You must be a person whose life cannot be spoken against; you must be faithful to your wife or husband, must exhibit self-control, live wisely, have a good reputation, must enjoy having guests in your home, and must be able to teach. Not a drinker or violent must be gentle, peace-loving, and not one who loves money—these things we must do.

How the last verse of our text today ends is something we should ponder over.  1Timothy 3:16 Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith: Christ appeared in the flesh and was shown to be righteous by the Spirit. He was seen by angels and was announced to the nations. He was believed on in the world and was taken up into heaven. How does this relate to how believers must conduct themselves? Beloved, you cannot say Christ is in your heart while Christ is not exhibited in your flesh. Christianity is not in the heart only; the works of your flesh must also prove your faith.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, grant me the grace to continue to do well in areas where I excel regarding this charge and help me in places where I have fallen short in Jesus' name. Amen.
