REPENTANCE

Psalms 7:12-13 If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow.  He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows.

Repentance is the change of heart and mind that results in a change of attitude. John the Baptist restated these facts to the Pharisees and Sadducees when he said to them in Matthew 3:8 Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.

Today, in our text, we will see how God deals with repentance. The first way God calls people unto repentance is through His word. The sharpened sword represents the word of God. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Through His word, God will speak to your heart and mind so you direct your body, which is represented by bones and marrow, to change its ways. When you fail to obey God's word that comes to you, God releases His second agent, which are his children or servants of God, to bring His word to you to repent. Isaiah 49:2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver. When you are in sin, and God sends his people to you, don't be angry because God has your interest at heart and is calling you unto salvation. These two are the major ways and means God calls all of us unto repentance.

2 Corinthians 13:1b: “The facts of every case must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses” When you fail to heed these two agents or witnesses and die in sin, there is no forgiveness for you. That was the fate of the rich man who was Lazarus' neighbour while on Earth. He wanted help from hell but he was denied.  Once you don't repent and believe in Jesus Christ and die in your sin, God only shoots his flaming arrows, He does send help to Hell. But the rich man had another request. He wanted someone to be sent from eternity to preach repentance for his house to repent, but that one was also denied.
Luke 16:28 For I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Luke 16:29-31 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, Father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ On earth, we have God's word and the servants of God as agents for repentance. Believe and be saved or ignore it at your disadvantage.

Prayer: Holy Spirit convict my heart and mind of my sinful state when I read the scriptures and hear God's servant. Let me believe and be saved to enjoy your presence and to escape the torment of hell in Jesus' name. Amen
