A DIFFERENT KIND OF LEADERSHIP
Luke 22:25-27 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
In every human society, there is a desire for leadership. What is your motivation to be a leader? Even among the disciples of Jesus because of the quest for power and leadership, there was a dispute among them. The world has its style of leadership where the leaders are the Lord the privilege of leadership over their subjects. But Jesus introduces a different kind of leadership to the disciples and all who will later follow Him. For the believer, the one with the highest qualification and credentials should see him or herself as the least and the leader should serve. This is called servant leadership. We as believers have been called to servant leadership. We are not the ones at the table but we are the table servers. This is the principle we should have when it comes to leadership. We are there to serve. And we don't do these things expecting human reward but the Lord who has called us will reward us. Jesus sums this up in the parable of the servant and the master. Luke 17:7-10 "Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ’Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ’Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that, you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?
So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ’We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’"
Prayer: Lord Jesus give me a heart of a servant leader to be able to lead in my generation as you desire of me in Jesus' name. Amen.
