THE PRIESTLY MINISTRY
Joshua 3:17, “Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed as the people passed by. They waited there until the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground.
The Levites and Aaron's lineage were eligible for the priesthood under the ancient covenant. They had the honour of offering sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. Every privilege carries a corresponding obligation. In order for the people to follow God and His leadings, it is the priest's primary duty to live holy lives while bearing God's presence.
Joshua 3:3, “And they commanded the people, saying, ‘When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.’” Paul renders this beautifully in its simplest way in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ. “
Under the new covenant, the priestly ministry is not for a selected few but all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ have been engrafted into this ministry. 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
Therefore, it is the duty of every born-again Christian to model a life of virtue that will draw others to Jesus Christ. Stability, separation or being set apart and intercession are additional obligations of the priest. The priests stood solidly on the dry ground while the crowds moved around them. On the rock-solid foundations of the Lord Jesus Christ, we have been commanded to stand.
Ephesians 6:13-14, “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness. The priest does not move with the crowd, they wait on God before they make a move. The doctrine of separation is a fundamental truth in our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. We have been called to walk on the narrow way, not Broadway with many people. We don't follow the crowd, but we wait on God.
The priest intercedes for the people, either between the people and God, or between the people and situation. 1 Timothy 2:1, “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men.” Beloved as a priest of God you must live an exemplary life that points others to Jesus Christ, be separated, stable and interceding for the people. Your priestly ministry is questionable if you are not doing these things. Arise and perform your priestly duties.
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me as your priest to live a life worthy of the calling. Empower me in all my responsibilities as God's priest in Jesus' name. Amen.
