THE MYSTERY OF MERCY
Isaiah 16:5 And in mercy shall the throne be established: and He shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.
Mercy. We always say God is merciful, but do we really know what that means? What is mercy? How does it apply to our lives? How does it affect us? Let’s read and find out.
The mystery of mercy–we will never be quite able to figure it out ourselves! God, our Judge, forgives and is merciful to the person who is repenting by giving us what we don’t deserve. We deserved to have died eternally because of sin, but He came down and paid the price; so we no longer die eternally if we accept His gift of salvation. Knowing this, we should be showing mercy to everyone and telling everyone about the mercy that is still at hand. We can tell them that we have a Defender up in heaven who defends us from the accuser which is Satan.
Proverbs 3:3-4 it says,
Let not mercy and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and men.
And God says, "Make sure they are always with you and never forsake them." Truth needs to be spoken and we need to be right, but mercy needs to be combined with truth. They go together. Truth without mercy becomes callused, hard, and cold. It is often legalistic. And mercy without truth becomes sentimental and wishy-washy and does not really take a stand. And mercy alone is not courageous and has no holiness to it. It must be mercy and truth.
Mercy holds back from us what we deserve. While grace gives us what we do not deserve. How wonderful it is to know that it involves His person. That is what His character is like. There is never a moment when you come to the Lord that He stops being merciful.
Prayer: Father, we ask that in these moments together as we look into Your heart and as we try to understand Your character through the revealed Word of God that is before us, I pray, Lord, that Your mercy will strengthen us. And that Your mercy will sustain us, Your mercy will save us, Your mercy will become a great blessing to every one of us in Jesus name.Amen
