THE KEY FACTOR IN A RELATIONSHIP

Philippians 2:5-7 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

The cross of Jesus Christ gives us a vertical and horizontal direction. Christ Jesus came to restore our relationship not only with God but also with one another. The vertical shows our relationship with God and the horizontal shows us our relationship with one another.

Paul in his letter to the Philippian church used the relationship between the Father and the Son to teach us how we ought to relate to each other. The Father and the Son have equal rights but different interests. We may have equal right with people but our interest varies. The Father's interest was for the Son to come to die for sinners and restore humanity to Him. The Son's interest was different, He was already reigning with the Father as a King. In a relationship, the most important thing to look out for is not right but interest. Interest matters more in a relationship than rights. These verses come before our text under study today reads, Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

The Father knew the interest of the Son was to remain a King forever and the Son also knew the interest of the Father was to restore humanity to Himself. Therefore the Son developed a certain mindset, and what was that mindset? He forfeited the equal right He has with Father and served the Father's interest. Beloved in your relationship with others quit demanding your rights and seek the other person's interest; in that, you will maintain your rights and your interest. Jesus after serving the Father's interest still has the same right as the Father and lives on as an everlasting King. Fighting for your right mostly does not get you anywhere. You rather lose it and lose your interest as well. Jacob served the interest of Esau by giving him a pot of stew and got the birthright. Right in the eyes of God is gained by service, not fights. This is a kingdom principle. In the kingdom, we don't fight for rights we serve to get our rights. And disciples of Jesus Christ we must have this mindset in relating to one another. We must live serving the interests of others that is the way to greatness.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me not to conform to the standards of the world. Fill me with the mindset of Jesus Christ that I will live my life to serve and to demand right because you are the one who lifts in Jesus' name. Amen.
