THE LOVE OF MANY THINGS

1 Kings 11:1 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.

God is love and He created us to love. Love is one of the most abused words in the human lexicon. Love has been selfishly defined to suit people's situations and interests. Even in iniquity people attribute their actions to love like King Solomon who claimed to love many foreign women against God's instructions. Anything done outside the will of God which is the word cannot be termed as love.

God gave us the command to love in its simplest and shortest way. Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus said to him, "`You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.` This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: `You shall love your neighbour as yourself.` Lack of understanding of these two instructions has landed humanity in our current crisis. Jesus Christ, while He lived on earth demonstrated these two instructions. His birth, life, death and resurrection demonstrated how to love the Lord with your heart, soul and mind. He was determined and resilient till He went to the cross died and was resurrected. He finished His assignment.  When you finish your assignment despite the challenges of life pleasing the Father, then you have fulfilled the first part.

The teachings of Jesus Christ and the Apostles give us an understanding of loving your neighbour as yourself. The teachings of Jesus Christ on forgiveness, and contentment coupled with other teachings of the Apostles and prophets help us to fulfil the requirements of the second instruction of loving your neighbour as yourself. The teaching on love in 1st  Corinthians 13, contentment in Timothy, how to maintain order among believers, family and homes etc. All the epistles show how to love one another. We have not been commanded to love many things, we have been commanded by God to love the things that please and honour Him. The love of many things has just one outcome, it will turn you away from the Lord.1 Kings 11:4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David.

Prayer: Holy Spirit stir me a desire to love as the Lord has commanded me to love. I give up on the love of anything that has the potential to draw me away from the Lord and I embrace the diligent love of the Lord and selfless love for others as the Father wills in Jesus' name. Amen!
