PEER COUNSELLING

1 Kings 12:8 But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers.

Rehoboam Solomon's son inherited the throne after the demise of his Father. Israel had one request after he was enthroned as a king. They requested that he lighten their burdens. 1 Kings 12:4 "Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you."
Rehoboam sought counsel from the elders but he rejected their counsel to ease the burden of the people and rather resorted to peer counselling. Take a look at the foolish counsel of his peers.

1 Kings 12:10-11 Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you should speak to this people who have spoken to you, saying, `Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us`--thus you shall say to them: `My little finger shall be thicker than my father`s waist! And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges! " What is the bible's take on peer counselling?  The father of this King Rehoboam wrote in Proverbs 18:24 There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. Peers and friends are people who are at par with you when it comes to the level of decision-making and thinking. Most often they will hail you, even when you are wrong.

The Bible seems to be quiet on peer counselling but emphasizes obeying the instructions of parents and the elderly with the caveat in the Lord. Amon raped her sister Tamar because of a bad advice from a peer.2 Samuel 13:3 But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David`s brother.1 Corinthians 15:33 Now Jonadab was a very crafty man. Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." The advice from the peers of Rehoboam caused an uprising against him during his reign. Any advice of a peer should be judged in the light of God's word. To be on the safer side always share counsel from peers with your parents and a trusted elder. Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother. Above all talk to the Holy Spirit about every issue and you will be given the best decision.

Prayer: Father I accept the counsel of your word above all others. Holy Spirit help me to filter out negative counsels and accept that which is pleasing to you only in Jesus' name. Amen
