THE DISCIPLINE OF A FATHER

1 Kings 1:6 Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, “Why are you doing that?” Adonijah had been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome.

Discipline is a key teaching in the Bible. The Word of God is very careful to mention fathers who disciplined their wards and those who did not. Discipline is an attribute of a father. Proverbs 3:12 For the lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Big names in the Bible like Eli the High Priest, prophet Samuel and the great King David are mentioned when it comes to compromising on disciplinary issues. Discipline is not about physical or emotional torture. Words like correct, teach, and command are closely linked to the word discipline.

This is what Abraham the father who disciplined his household did. Genesis 18:19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him." Disciple is from the word discipline. What did Jesus Christ do with His twelve disciples? He taught them! Mark 8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mark 14:49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."

Discipline is about teaching and training. We discipline through teaching and training to make disciples. Children and society exhibit indiscipline because of a lack of teaching and training. Ephesians 6:4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Fathers arise, teach and train for society to keep the way of the Lord and to do righteousness and justice.

Prayer: Holy Spirit revive our fathers and all leaders who must rise to ensure discipline across the globe. Fill their hearts and minds with your word that they will arise to teach and train right for righteousness and justice to prevail in Jesus' name. Amen!
