DISCERNING THE VOICE OF GOD

1 Kings 19:11-12 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper.

Psalms 29:4-8 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
The voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, Yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon. He makes them also skip like a calf, Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord divides the flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; The Lord shakes the Wilderness of Kadesh.

All the manifestation that was displayed before Elijah are some of the ways that God speaks but at that particular point in time God had not chosen that way to speak. The last time Elijah experienced God it was in a flame of fire yet here is another flame of fire passing but God is not in it. 1 Kings 18:37-38 O  Lord, answer me! Answer me so these people will know that you, O  Lord, are God and that you have brought them back to yourself.” Immediately the fire of the lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust. It even licked up all the water in the trench! How did Elijah discern that this time around God was not in the fire? It is not by might or by power but by the Spirit of God.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Elijah was able to discern because of the Holy Spirit. John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. The Holy Spirit taught Elijah the distinguished voices of God. Do not walk with God based on experiences. If the experience was what it takes then the disciples of Jesus Christ who had been in apprenticeship for three years or more had enough qualifications to start up right after the exit of Jesus Christ our Lord. But not so with God, it takes the Holy Spirit to discern God and spiritual things. Be filled with the Spirit and be led by the Spirit so you don't err in discerning God's voice.

Prayer: Holy Spirit fill me up with the knowledge of God and with the Spirit of discernment that I may not miss your voice when you speak to me in Jesus' name. Amen.
