THE WOMAN AND HER MARRIAGE

Mark 6:18-19 John kept telling Herod, "It is illegal for you to marry your brother's wife." Herodias was enraged and wanted John killed in revenge, but without Herod's approval she was powerless.

Genesis 2:23-24 "At last!" Adam exclaimed. "She is part of my own flesh and bone! She will be called 'woman,' because she was taken out of a man." This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

The origin of marriage in the Bible does not present the woman as being proactive when getting married. From the first example of marriage between man and woman, we see Adam doing the talking and God reaffirming that the man leaves his parents and unites with his wife to be one flesh. The first child of God was Adam, but the moment he got married, God understood that his number one companion and partner he had to communicate with in everything was his wife. God, in His Sovereignty, could not interrupt when the woman gave the man, His first son, wrong counsel. Other Biblical examples of marriages are the union between Isaac and Rebecca and the marriage between Jacob, Rachel, and Leah. In these two, also we see Abraham taking the initiative to find his son a wife, and in the case of Jacob, he sacrifices years of service to get his wives.

But in recent times, the order has changed, and women have taken on the responsibility of being proactive about marriage. It is women who press men to marry them.  Nobody dares come in the way of a woman regarding her marital decisions. Look at Herodias in our text today; she did not bother marrying her husband's brother, and when a prophet of God offered advice to the man, not her, she made sure she presented with the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter, she mind placing her daughter and her entire generation under the wrath of God to be married. The head is the decision-making system of the body. This implies that when it comes to marriage, most women lose their sense of reasoning, and they intend cut off people who will give them wise counsel. They can go to the extent of killing the forerunner of the Messiah to be married and to remain married. Some women have lost touch with God, well-meaning pastors, family, and friends because they gave wise counsel about their marriage. Sisters let us allow the pattern of God to prevail in our marital decisions; let's allow the Holy Spirit to lead us and accept godly counsel in marital decisions because if we fail to do so and it turns sour, God, Himself, will go mute on us for a while. Holy Spirit, help your maidens.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, forgive any maiden who disobeyed you and neglected you in a bid to marry; have mercy, forgive and restore. For those yet to make such decisions, we humble and submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit and godly advice. So help us, Lord, in Jesus' name. Amen.
