DON'T ABUSE FREEDOM

Galatians 5:13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

Freedom has a positive meaning and a negative meaning. When the positive meaning of freedom is not rightly applied then you begin to walk or operate in the negative meaning of freedom. Freedom on the positive side means the state of being free, of not being imprisoned or enslaved. On the negative side, it means improper familiarity; and violation of the rules of decorum.

There are people who because of freedom have been enslaved now. What was supposed to make them free has rather bound them. This was what Paul was addressing in Galatians 5:13. The abuse of freedom. When you have freedom you can eat anything, wear anything, watch anything,  you enjoy freedom of speech, association, movement, etc. Freedom doesn't put you under any restrictions but freedom can be abused and when freedom is abused it enslaves. People have ended up as alcoholics, and drug addicts, some have been imprisoned some even died because of freedom.

Don't use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature implies that you do not use freedom to disobey God, and do anything against others and yourself that is contrary to God's word.  Galatians 5:19-2 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. The freedom you have in Christ is for a purpose to serve God, others, and yourself in love. Are you truly free or your freedom has enslaved you? Who the Son has set free is free indeed. Hallelujah!

Prayer: Holy Spirit help me not to abuse the freedom I have in Christ. I pledge allegiance to Christ in total freedom that brings honour and glory to His name in Jesus' name. Amen.
