THOSE WHO REST IN PEACE

Isaiah 57:1-2: The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.

God’s perspective on death is vastly different from ours. “The devout are taken away … to be spared from evil.” Sometimes Christians die young to be spared and they have peace, whereas there is no peace for the wicked (verse 21).

This isn’t something we like to consider. God deliberately taking a believer in death to spare them the evil of this world, particularly if it’s a young person. It seems tragic that they haven’t had the chance to fulfil their potential. Long life is usually regarded as a blessing from God.

The other confusing thing is that some people grow up in appalling and abusive circumstances and aren’t spared the evil of the situation. How do we reconcile these two different responses from God?

We don’t have the benefit of being able to see the future as God does. We don’t know the particular evil or its consequences that God is protecting someone from. Our perspective is incomplete. Yet this verse offers hope. God understands whatever we’re going through and will provide a way through or a way out. Death isn’t the end and we have the assurance of peace in the world to come. This isn’t an excuse to escape life’s difficulties but rather an opportunity to trust God’s Sovereignty.

There are times when it’s difficult to understand God’s ways. However, if we seek to know God’s character and fully appreciate his love and goodness, we will find he is worthy of our trust.
