GOD'S RAW MATERIAL

Isaiah 64:8: Yet Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; we all are the work of Your hands.

The Lord created man in His image – He built and made and formed man after His likeness. Humanity, though a fallen race, has its root in the almighty Creator and we can trace our beginnings back through Noah, to Seth the son of Adam, the son of God: the federal head of the human race.

God did not give up on His prideful, rebellious disobedient creation but in His omniscience knew that we would fall. And so, He perfected His plan of redemption, before the foundation of the world, through the redeeming blood of His only begotten Son – the Lord Jesus Christ – the third member of the eternal Trinity.

God gradually revealed Himself more and more to mankind through the little nation of Israel – He cared for them as a Shepherd and adopted them as His son - He loved them as a caring Father and tenderly nurtured them as a devoted Husband. He desired to use them as His special people for His possession, who would tell the nations that God is God and there is no other.

Like Adam, they also rebelled in prideful disobedience – but Isaiah in this beautiful repentant prayer for grace and mercy towards His people pleaded, Yet LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our Potter; we all are the work of Your hands. He looked back at all that God had done for his nation and praised God for His loving-kindness and long-suffering towards them – he recalled the many ways that Israel had strayed from their heavenly Father and cried out to God to show His pity and strength on behalf of the errant nation.

In this church age, we too can leave our first love and stray from the path of righteousness. If and when we do find ourselves far from the Lord, we too need to remember all that He has done for us, as did Isaiah – we need to confess our foolish ways, turn from our prideful sin and return in humble submission into the hands of our heavenly Potter.

Prayer: Loving Father I come to You in humility of heart and ask that You make and mould me into a vessel that is pleasing to You - for Your praise and glory, in Jesus name I pray, AMEN.
