THE OUTSTANDING AMONG CREATION
Psalms 8:4 What are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?
The psalmist begins Psalms eight on a note of praise. Psalms 8:1 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. Our God is majestic in all He does. His works display His majesty.
In Psalms eight the writer carefully observes God's creation and notices the outstanding among them. In verse eight, he looks at the magnificence of the sky, moon and stars. These are beautiful to behold, yet in his thoughts, he knew one of God's creations had an advantage over all these things. Psalms 8:3-4 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Human beings are the last creation of God, yet we were the ones He made in His image and likeness. The trees, mountains, sky, oceans, and animals are powerful to behold, yet none was made in the image and likeness of God.
David ponders about the weakness of man, how unfaithful and inconsistent we can be, how we soon perish, and how we can be disobedient towards God and His ways, yet God gives us the needed attention. There are two things the Psalmist notices God does for humans. He said what man that you should think about is. One thought that occupies the mind of God is humans, you and I. God doesn't think about plants and animals. His only thought is about you and I. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. God thinks about you and has a plan to prosper you.
The next thing the writer noticed God does for humans is that He cares for us. Care has synonyms like close attention, concern, responsibility, maintenance, upkeep etc. God has a responsibility towards you. He supervised you from conception and birth to where you are now. Isaiah 49:15-16 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me. God cares. The result of God's thoughtfulness and care for us is seen in Psalms 8:5-6 Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honour. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority. 2 Peter 1:3 By His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
Prayer: Father thank you for your thoughtfulness and care for my life. Thank you for giving all things for my well-being and enjoyment. Lord, I am grateful. Thank you, Jesus Christ. Amen.
