THINKING ABOUT THE CALL

1 Kings 19:20 Elisha left the oxen standing there, ran after Elijah, and said to him, “First let me go and kiss my father and mother good-bye, and then I will go with you!”Elijah replied, “Go on back, but think about what I have done to you.”

It is exciting when you receive a promotion or when you have been called into a new office especially when you were not expecting it. It was with great joy and excitement that Elisha received the call to be the next prophet after Elijah. Immediately he wanted to leave all and to follow him. Elijah told him to go back and think about what he had done to him. What did Elijah do to him?

1 Kings 19:19 So Elijah went and found Elisha son of Shaphat plowing a field. There were twelve teams of oxen in the field, and Elisha was plowing with the twelfth team. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak across his shoulders and then walked away. Elijah met Elisha has someone in business. In those days oxen were used to cultivate lands for planting and harvesting. Two oxen made a team. It means Elisha had 24 oxen which proposes that he had a great field and was a great business person in his field of operation. Elijah “threw his cloak around [Elisha]” as a symbol of Elijah’s ministry being passed on to Elisha. The prophet’s mantle was an indication of his authority and responsibility as God’s chosen spokesman. Such as responsibility is not something we hasten to do. You need to think about it.

What Elijah said to Elisha when Jesus Christ came He had a similar thing to say.
Luke 14:28-30 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? After Elisha thought through all that he had to do for God and Israel he gave up on his work, slaughtered his oxen had a barbecue party, and went to be Elijah's assistant and to work. Maybe you may not have to quit your job.  But there is definitely some thinking you need to do about the call.
