DECEPTION MAKES SLAVE

Joshua 9:4 they resorted to deception to save themselves. They sent ambassadors to Joshua, loading their donkeys with weathered saddlebags and old, patched wineskins.

The Gibeonites when they saw and heard that Joshua and the armies of Israel has defeated all the kings around Jericho decided to play a smart one Joshua and the people of Israel.

They disguised themselves as people from far a country looking dirty and hungry and brought an appeal to Joshua and the Israelites that they should allow them to stay among them. With a heart of compassion and yet a little doubt they allowed them in. After some physical assessments, the people of Israel went into a treaty with them. Joshua 9:11-14 And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ’Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We are your servants; make a treaty with us." This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you.

But now see how dry and mouldy it is. And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey." The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. After some time the people of Israel got to know that the Gibeonites were their close neighbours but there was nothing they could do because they had entered into a treaty with them. God respects convenants. The deception of the Gibeonites had severe repercussions on them. They were placed under a curse and they become the servants in Israel till today. Deception looks smart but it never wins. It is the truth that sets us free. John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Is better to speak the truth to be free than to lie to stay in bondage.

Prayer: Holy Spirit fill me with the Spirit of truth and take any deceptions from my heart in Jesus' name. Amen.
